BJP demands Bhardwaj's recall

BJP Legislature Party adopted a resolution at a meeting describing Bhardwaj's recommendation as "politically ill-motivated" and "against the spirit of the Constitution".
Senior party leader M Venkaiah Naidu told legislators that they will be paraded before President Pratibha Patil in New Delhi tomorrow to expose the Governor's "anti-democratic act".

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said he enjoyed the support of 121 BJP MLAs in the 225-member Assembly. He termed the Governor's action as "undemocratic and politically ill-motivated."

Accusing Bhardwaj, a former Union law minister, of converting Raj Bhavan into "Congress Bhavan", he said his action violated the Supreme Court verdict in the S R Bommai case.
By his recommendation, the Governor has become a "laughing stock", Yeddyurappa said, adding, his recall has become "inevitable".

Charging Bhardwaj with "deliberately acting adversely" in the interest of the state, the resolution said his report to the President to keep the Assembly in suspended animation was "without any substantive reason and against the spirit of the Constitution".

"Hence, we strongly demand the Central Government and President of India to recall Governor H R Bhardwaj from Karnataka with immediate effect," said the resolution read out by BJP state unit President K S Eshwarappa.

Naidu, who made a blistering attack on the Governor, warned that if the Centre accepted Bhardwaj's recommendation, it would invite "universal condemnation". He sought to allay apprehension in the minds of the legislators, saying: "Nothing to worry. We are going to complete our term".

Yeddyurappa said chief ministers of NDA-ruled states "are in touch with us and giving all support".

Another resolution said the legislature party which included MLAs who have returned to the party fold and three new legislators elected in the recent bye-election, backed Yeddyurappa as their leader.

Ministers and BJP MLAs later held a dharna near the Mahatma Gandhi statue, dropping their earlier plan to hold such a protest in front of the Raj Bhavan.
They raised anti-Governor slogans and demanded his immediate recall.

Karnataka cabinet decides on assembly session from June 2

Karnataka's Bharatiya Janata Party government, struggling to ward off its possible dismissal, Monday decided to convene the state assembly's session from June 2.

"The cabinet decided to hold assembly session for 10 days from June 2 and the governor has been intimated," Law Minister S. Suresh Kumar told reporters here.

The B.S. Yeddyurappa government May 13 decided to hold the session from Monday, soon after the Supreme Court restored the membership of 16 rebels, 11 of the BJP and five Independents.

However, Governor H.R. Bhardwaj did not agree to it and instead late Sunday sent a "special report" to the central government recommending dismissal of the Yeddyurappa government, direct central rule in the state and keeping the assembly in suspended animation.

Rajinikanth may go abroad for treatment

Actor Rajinikath is back in hospital for pneumonia, renal and gastro-intestinal problems. Doctors at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre, Porur in Chennai, where the 61-year-old film icon was admitted on Saturday, said he was being treated for recurrent respiratory infection and a stomach ailment. His stressful schedules coupled with lifestyle habits, including smoking, could have worsened his health condition.

Rajinikanth, who had returned home after two rounds of hospitalization, was rushed back to hospital on Saturday when his respiratory problems worsened. A series of investigations including a CT scan was done by a team of doctors, who concluded that he suffered from pneumonia.

They found he had fluid accumulation between the layers of the tissue that line the lungs and chest cavity. Blood test reports also showed elevated levels of creatinine in blood showing signs of kidney disorders and other gastrointestinal problems. He is being intermittently given oxygen support and is pumped in with antibiotics to clear infection of the lower respiratory tract. A medical bulletin from the hospital said he was ''not in the ICU and has been progressing well''.

On April 29, the actor was first taken to the hospital when he complained of fatigue and vomiting on the first day of shooting for his upcoming film Rana. Doctors at the St Isabel's Hospital said he was dehydrated and exhausted. He was discharged the same day. On May 4, he was moved into the ICU of the hospital with breathing difficulty and discomfort. A week later, he was discharged and advised rest.

His wife, Latha, said on Friday that his health condition was improving. Senior doctors visited him at his residence. But in Saturday, the family moved him to Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre after he once again complained of discomfort.
